A new poll of nations around the world finds broad worldwide support for the principle of media freedom and opposition to government control of the media. Even in China – despite the official line that media should be propaganda organs of the communist party – the majority want more media freedom. The exceptions are Middle Eastern countries and Russia, where there is substantial support for regulation of news or ideas that are potentially destabilising. Singapore was not polled in this survey, which is published in advance of International Press Freedom Day (May 3). Click here for the full article.
