China has freed Ching Cheong, The Straits Times‘ Hong Kong-based correspondent who was jailed for alleged espionage activities in 2006, Chinese government officials said on Tuesday, reports ST Online. Ching’s ordeal is a reminder to Singaporeans of the life-threatening dangers that journalists face in several parts of the world. His case is also part of a trend: “Governments are now less likely to imprison a journalist explicitly for his or her work than to bring vague antistate charges such as subversion,” writes Joel Simon in the latest edition of Attacks on the Press published by the Committee to Protect Journalists. China remains the country with the greatest number of writers imprisoned.
